How could you apply to a College in Chile ?
To get into a college in Chile, it`s a large process but, very "simple" at the same time.
First, you need to finish your high schooling studies, 2nd, you need to give a kind of Aptitude exam, here in Chile we call it PDT (Prueba de Transición/Transition Test), back in my days it was called PSU (Prueba de Selección Universitaria/University Selection Test), you have 4 different tests 2 are "optional" and 2 are necesary, the 2 optionals, you could choose between Science or History test or, both, the 2 necesary ones was Math and Language, some Majors ask for the Science test and others the History test, you´ll need to search first. Besides those tests, there´s something called NEM and Ranking, basically the NEM it´s an average score that you get by the mean of your 4 years into high school, the ranking it´s a score based on how good your NEM is comparing to the others of your generation/past generation.
These differents types of score will give you a certain score depending of the University you chose, there´s Us that asks for 25% of NEM and 25% Ranking and others that asks only 10% of each so, depending on the ponderation the University you like to go, you get a mean Score to apply to your Career/U and compete with others students that wants the same, that´s why it´s so important to get good Grades in High School and study to the PDT.
It´s a 2 day test, after the test you need to wait like 2 months to get the results, then, once you got those results, you need to apply by preference into Universitys/Careers depending on how good your average score was and, depending on the "ponderation" of the University/Career you chose. Once you´ve applied, you´ll need to wait for 2-3 weeks to get the result if you´ve got accepted or not, then, you´ll need to register into the University, sometimes you need to pay a X amount to this depending if you have any scholarships/Grants.
There´s other ways to get into a college in Chile, some Universitys have special get in ways to foreign students or high perfomance athletes that doesn´t ask for the PSU or PDT.
My experience was pretty good, even tho i´ve learned this things by the "bad way" but, i don´t regret it, if i could change something in my aplication process, i would change my grades in high school, they could be a lot better than it was, they were not bad at all, but they were not amazing either. The difficult part for me was waiting for the PSU results, the easiest part was doing the test, because after 3-4 hours you were done but, the 2 months wait was terrible T-T.
I chose my Major because i liked a lot of logical/maths problems, i´m a future Engineer in Game Development so, my Major got all the things i like/liked and those were i´m good at.
If you´re not decided yet what you wan´t to studie, my advice for you would be: Think about your skills set, what you´re good at and, what you like, think about if you want to work with this area for the rest of your life. A Hobby it´s different than a Job ! consider this.
